The
Refuge pack is organised thematically, charting
the experiences of refugees as individuals who now form part of
our community. The five themes are:
a) Lives in Danger
b) Flight and Escape
c) Finding Refuge
d) Images of 'Them' and 'Us'
e) Families and Support Structures
The
Refuge Teacher's Resource Pack covers the key skills in Key Stages
3 and 4 Citizenship Curriculum, and the Key Stage 4 Respect For
All Curriculum: Migration in Britain. It also includes many opportunities
for cross-curricular links. It can be used as a modular programme
or separate individual units. The film resource is suitable for
Year 9 upwards, while the written materials are targeted for Year
10 students.
A
64-page teacher's guide containing useful information, curriculum
advice, worksheets, teacher's notes, lesson guidelines and glossary.
"In my view these are really powerful educational resources, produced to a very high standard indeed. They have obvious uses in English, media, drama, history, geography and RE lessons as well as in PSHE and citizenship. The materials allow teachers to introduce important - but difficult - issues to their pupils without lecturing or preaching. I'd recommend them to any secondary school. I'm extremely impressed with the project."
Dr Christine Hall,
Director of Initial Teacher Education, School of Education, University of Nottingham,
13th February 2004 East Midlands Head of English Annual Conference
"This
excellent resource for schools enables students to examine the
trauma of becoming a refugee and seeking asylum in the UK. Its
objective examination of the asylum issue provides a unique set
of resources which are appropriate for use across a range of curriculum
areas at secondary level. Materials are teacher- and student-friendly,
providing a range of teachers' notes and worksheets to accompany
the 19 short videos. Students have the opportunity to hear young
people of their own age talking about refugees in a positive and
thought-provoking manner. I would recommend these materials to
any teachers interested in exploring the asylum issue in depth."
Karen Emmott, Co-ordinator for Refugees and Asylum Seekers,
Northamptonshire LEA
"This
carefully researched resource is a valuable support to teachers
in this very important field."
Tony Breslin, Chief Executive, Citizenship Foundation
"The
Refuge Project films are excellent - just the right timing, very
good to engage class interest and stimulate discussion. I will
use the pack as part of the PSHE and Citizenship curriculum, which
will be delivered by tutors from a variety of subject backgrounds.
I would also like to build bits of Refuge into the post-16 General
Studies programme. In the right school, it could be fantastic
with all those cross-curricular links and clear outcomes."

School, Nottinghamshire
"My
attitude has changed. It's made me realise above all else that
when you see refugees, they are not just faces on the TV or 6
o'clock news. They are people with real problems and real issues
and they want to talk about them."
Ian Redfearn, Year 10, Tuxford Comprehensive School, Tuxford,
Nottinghamshire
